The NUJS Kolkata employee’s internal sexual harassment complaint against another staffer has become a criminal matter, after she filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the police alleging sexual harassment, physical assault and criminal intimidation by threatening to attack her with acid.
The Times of India reported on Saturday that the victim alleged in her complaint: “The accused tried to foster personal interaction with me despite a clear indication of disinterest on my part. He regularly spied on me, even when I was at home. He tracked my movements, both inside and outside the college. I have sufficient evidence to substantiate my claims.
“He made physical contact and advances that involved explicit sexual overtures. He used to gesticulate to show me signs of sexual intercourse. I resisted vehemently and on one occasion, I even threw a paper weight at him to escape his physical overtures. He kept on telling me that ‘he has fallen in love with me’ and won’t stop unless I went to bed with him.”
She also alleged that he had threatened to physically attack her with acid unless she “bedded with him”, allegedly showing her a bottle that he claimed contained acid, and showing her a picture of an acid attack victim.
While the other accused member of staff was currently on leave on medical grounds, the inquiry into the matter had been put on hold on 19 July, as reported by Legally India at the time.
The TOI reported that the victim wrote: “I fear that on his return from leave on August 2, he will make an attempt to throw acid on me and cause permanent damage and deformity to my face.”
