Bombay High Court directed the Pune Police to refrain from taking any coercive action against a young couple, who are apprehending arrest at the hands of police in a case of cheating and theft registered by the girl’s father at Pimpri police station after she and her boyfriend eloped and got married.

The direction was given by a division bench of Justices Naresh Patil and Revati Mohite-Dhere during the hearing of a petition filed by young couple seeking police protection and immunity from the alleged false case registered against them.

The court in its order asked the prosecution to take instructions from the police regarding status of investigation, and adjourned the hearing till November 18.

Advocate Mahesh Vaswani appearing on behalf of petitioner contended that couple fear getting killed, or implicated in false cases, at the behest of the girl’s father, who is in transport business and allegedly has ‘contacts’ in high places.

They got married at a temple in Nashik on October 30 and since then have been in hiding.
